Fun Fact: Did you know that snakes can’t move in a straight line?

Snake slithering is a common way for snakes to move around. Depending on the terrain, a snake may move in different ways. In some types of terrain, a snake will flatten its body and wiggle from side to side to get where it needs to go. This type of movement is called lateral undulation and can be seen in many types of terrain, especially sand or gravel. In other types of terrain, like grass or dirt, a snake may move in an up-and-down motion called rectilinear locomotion.

Snakes can also coil their bodies and slither through tight spaces by combining lateral undulation and rectilinear locomotion. This is often seen when snakes are trying to travel through thick vegetation or narrow cracks.

A snake can also change direction quickly by using its tail as a rudder and redirecting its momentum in the opposite direction.

When a snake is slithering, it typically takes two basic poses: S-shaped and looped. In an S-shaped pose, the snake’s body is raised off the ground and curved into an S-shape. This helps it to keep its balance as it travels over uneven surfaces. In a looped pose, the snake’s body is bent into a loop and held close to the ground for stability.

No matter which pose it takes, snake slithering can be a mesmerizing sight to witness and an important part of snake behavior. It helps snakes to navigate their environments safely and efficiently, whether they’re seeking food, shelter, or just exploring the world around them.

Snakes are an incredibly versatile subject for drawing. They can be drawn in various poses and shapes, so you can always be creative when creating snake drawings.

Cobra snakes, in particular, have a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so you can experiment with different poses to find the one that’s right for your drawing.
